Venus Williams struggled in her opening round match of the U.S. Open but bounced back in the second round, having little trouble getting past Bethanie Mattek-Sands in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday to move into the third round.
Venus collected 29 winners in the match and broke Mattek-Sands’ serve on four of six opportunities while surrendering just one break point of her own. Mattek-Sands struggled against her American counterpart, finishing with just nine winners in the match.
Venus Williams has seven Grand Slam singles titles, five of them at Wimbledon and another two at the U.S. Open. The American has reached the finals at the Australian Open and the French Open but lost to her sister, Serena Williams, in both of those Grand Slam finals.
