Flavia Pennetta needed less than an hour to move into the third round at the 2009 U.S. Open on Wednesday, crushing Sania Mirza in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Pennetta, still searching for her first career Grand Slam singles title, has dropped a total of four games in her first two matches.
Pennetta put just 38 percent of her first serves in play but managed to win 63 percent of those and 73 percent of her second serves. Mirza looked completely overmatched as she won just 20 percent of her first serves that were put in play, committed 28 unforced errors and had her serve broke six times.
Pennetta is yet to win a Grand Slam singles title but she did reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open last year. The Italian has reached the fourth round at Wimbledon twice, in 2005 and 2006 and reached the fourth round at the French Open in 2008.
