Chilean Police Arrest Former Officials Tied to Killings Under Pinochet Rule

Chilean police have arrested at last 25 former officials who allegedly took part in numerous killings during General Augusto Pinochet’s rule.

Pinochet held absolute power in Chile from 1973 until 1990 and during that span thousands of people opposed to his rule disappeared or were killed. It was Chile’s secret police, Dina, that carried out the operations designed to suppress the activists.

On Tuesday a Chilean judge issued 129 warrants against former members of Dina, specifying numerous military and security officials during Pinochet’s rule that never faced charges.

Since Pinochet peacefully stepped down in 1990 activists have been calling for a trial to prosecute those who were responsible for the murders. Pinochet was facing numerous charges when he was placed under house arrest but he died in 2006 before he could be convicted.
