Rafael Nadal returned to the court after a knee injured kept him out of Wimbledon and the Spaniard wasted little time in asserting his presence at the 2009 U.S. Open, beating Richard Gasquet in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the second round. Nadal is searching for his first U.S. Open singles title, a title that would give him a career Grand Slam.
Nadal used his classic approach of minimizing his mistakes, committing just 10 unforced errors in the match and winning 94 percent of his first serves put in play. Nadal controlled the match with his serve, never allowing Gasquet a break point opportunity while the Frenchman was broken five times.
Nadal, the won the Australian Open earlier this year but then fell in the fourth round at the French Open to Robin Söderling after winning the Grand Slam event the past four years. Nadal then withdrew from Wimbledon due to his knee injury injury. In 2008 Nadal captured his first Wimbledon title leaving the U.S. Open as the only Grand Slam event the 22-year-old Spaniard hasn’t won.
