Charles Gibson Leaving World News, Diane Sawyer his Replacement

Charles Gibson has announced he is stepping down as the anchor of ABC’s World News in January. Current Good Morning America host Diane Sawyer is set to take over, making her the second woman to assume the lead anchor position at a network newscast.

Gibson co-hosted GMA with Sawyer from 1999 to 2006. He left the morning show in 2006 and became the anchor at World News Tonight.

“It has not been an easy decision to make,” Gibson told his staff in an e-mail. “This has been my professional home for almost 35 years. And I love this news department, and all who work in it, to the depths of my soul.”
