Kim Clijsters dropped a tough opening set to Marion Bartoli in the second round of the 2009 U.S. Open but managed to fight back and take the final two sets to earn a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over the Frenchwoman to stay on track for her second career Grand Slam singles title.
Clijsters won 64 percent of her first serves put in play and managed to collect 39 winners in the match while Bartoli struggled, hitting just 13 winners. The Belgian also took advantage of the opportunities presented to her as she broke Bartoli’s serve on seven of nine chances.
Clijsters, the former world’s number one, captured her only Grand Slam singles title at the U.S. Open in 2005 after beating Mary Pierce. She has reached the finals at the French Open twice and the Australian Open once.
