The Florida Gators 41-14 dismantling of Ohio State on Monday night earned the SEC school their second national championship and the #1 spot in the final AP Top 25 Poll for 2006.
The AP conceded that the game between #1 and #2 would determine who would finish in those spots. Despite suffering a blowout, the Buckeyes of Ohio State landed at #2 in the AP rankings.
Fresh of their own 41-14 thumping of Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl the LSU Tigers jumped to the #3 spot and helped solidify the belief that the SEC is college football’s dominant conference.
USC bounced back from their crushing loss to UCLA in the final game of the regular season to beat Michigan 32-18 in the Rose Bowl and earn the #4 ranking in the AP Top 25 at season’s end.
The Cinderella story of the season, Boise State, jumped all the way up to #5 and was the only other team to receive a vote as number one. The Broncos capped their perfect 13-0 season with a 43-42 overtime thriller against Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.
Louisville will look back at the Bobby Petrino years and smile. The Cardinals finished a school best #6 after they beat Wake Forest 24-13 in this year’s Orange Bowl. Petrino was announced as the Atlanta Falcons new head coach yesterday.
