B.B. Cunningham Jr., a musician in Jerry Lee Lewis’s band, was killed early Sunday while working as a security guard at an apartment complex on the southeast side of Memphis, Tennessee. Police say the 70-year-old was shot to death around 2 a.m. while investigating the sound of a gunshot. Officers also found a 16-year-old boy dead from a gunshot wound. No other details have been released.
Cunningham’s family confirmed his death to the AP, but did not release a statement about the keyboardist and singer.
Cunningham first rose to fame in the 60s as a member of the touring version of Ronnie and the Daytonas. The band eventually changed their name to The Hombres. Cunningham left The Hombres in the early 70s and became a chief engineer at Independent Recorders in Los Angeles. He later moved back to Memphis to open his own recording studio. Cunningham joined Jerry Lee Lewis’ band in 1997. He released a solo album, Hangin’, in 2003.
