After a disappointing 8-8 season and a first-round playoff exit for the second year in a row it seemed NY Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was destined to be replaced. Instead he was rewarded with a one-year contract extension.
John Mara, a co-owner of the Giants, said in a statement “Tom Coughlin is our coach for 2007 and hopefully for many years after that. That is the final decision.” Mara’s partner, Jonathan Tisch said “He did not have to save his job. He did not have to talk us into anything.”
It will be up to Coughlin to steer Eli Manning in the right direction after seemingly losing confidence in the second half of the season. With the retirement of Tiki Barber, and the Giants constant battle with untimely injuries Coughlin will have his hands full.
Coughlin has compiled a 25-25 record as the Giants head coach and led them to the NFC East title a year ago.
Coughlin’s contract called for $3 million on 2007.
