Investigators have been sifting through the ash and twisted metal that bares evidence to the destructive nature of a Malibu fire. The $60 million in damages to homes along Malibu Road are the result of a blaze that moved swiftly down from Malibu Bluff Parks courtesy of the Santa Ana winds.
Five houses were destroyed by the dancing inferno while another six suffered damages.
Suzanne Somers, an owner of one of the destroyed houses, spoke reflectively to reporters “It was a beautiful house, it was a beautiful place to live.”
Investigators have yet to determine the origin of the blaze but Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief P. Michael Freeman was quick to say “At this point nothing is being ruled out in terms of the cause.”
While the cause of the flame is of concern, so to is the reason for the rapid spread from the natural area in the park to the residences. Many believe it could be the result of home owners ignoring the state restrictions concerning the amount of brush that can be cleared away from homes. The restrictions are meant as a vegetation and wildlife preservation initiative but could also act as a buffer for flames.
As for Somers, while the loss of a home was certainly felt she exhibited a phoenix like mentality saying, “We’ll rebuild.”
Malibu residents have long included the who’s who of Hollywood stars with Johnny Carson, Bob Dylan, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Goldie Hawn, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Bill Murray, Sean Penn, Michelle Pfieffer, Robert Redford, Charlie Sheen, Sting, and Bruce Willis among its exclusive residents at one time or another.
