The United States has opted to halt all non-humanitarian aid to Honduras in response to the current government’s failure to “restore democratic, constitutional rule.”
It has been more than two months since Roberto Micheletti took power in Honduras following a coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya. Since the June 28 coup Zelaya has not been allowed to return to the country and has been told if he tries to return he will be arrested.
Several countries, including the U.S., have demanded that Zelaya be returned to power yet the interim government has refused. That interim government has insisted that Zelaya was in the process of trying to change the country’s constitution so that he could remain in power.
Despite those allegations the United States has insisted Zelaya is the democratically elected leader and because the interim government refuses to restore him to office they will now block more than $200 million in aid.
According to a State Department spokesman “The Secretary of State (Hillary Clinton) has made the decision, consistent with US legislation, recognizing the need for strong measures in light of the continued resistance to the adoption of the San Jose Accord by the de facto regime and continuing failure to restore democratic, constitutional rule to Honduras.”
The San Jose Accord, brokered by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, outlined that Zelaya would be restored to limited power until the country held its elections in November.
