Shortly after Ali Ben Bongo was declared the winner of Gabon’s presidential election opposition activists staged a violent protest, clashing with security forces across the country.
Many opposition supporters have claimed that the presidential elections had been rigged to favor Bongo, the son of former President Omar Bongo who ruled the country for the last 41 years. Several of those opposition activists have blamed France for backing Bongo and the French consulate in Port Gentil was torched during the protests.
Those same protestors stormed a jail in the city and freed inmates, leading to the government instituting a curfew in Port Gentil.
In the capital city of Libreville police fired teargas and used batons to break up large crowds yet the violence continued to rage.
The outcome of the presidential election outraged former interior minister Andre Mba Obame who finished second to Bongo. According to Obame the election results were not valid and he considers himself the winner.
Despite the unrest Bongo has pledged to unify the oil-rich country, announcing “As far as I am concerned, I am and I will always be the president of all the people of Gabon.”
