Dinara Safina hasn’t had a very smooth opening to her 2009 U.S. Open, once again dropping a first set only to rally and earn a win, this time knocking off Kristina Barrois 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3 to move into the third round and keep her hopes of capturing her first Grand Slam singles title.
Safina managed to put 67 percent of her first serves in play, winning 66 percent of those offerings but she also committed an astounding 15 double faults in the match, a trend that could cost her against a better opponent. Barrois finished the match with 43 unforced errors and won just 52 percent of her first servs put in play.
Safina has reached the finals of the French Open the last two years but fell to Ana Ivanovic in 2008 and then Svetlana Kuznetsova earlier this year. In 2009 she reached the finals at the Australian Open but again fell, this time to Serena Williams. Despite never winning a Grand Slam singles title Safina reached the number one in the rankings on April 27, 2009.
