Melanie Oudin pulled off a huge upset at the 2009 U.S. Open on Thursday, knocking off #4 seed Elena Dementieva in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to move into the third round in New York.
Oudin, coming off a fourth round appearance at Wimbledon, continued to impress as the 17-year-old overcame 44 unforced errors to stun the Russian. Dementieva was hoping to capture her first Grand Slam singles title, having reached the finals at the French Open and U.S. Open, but nine double faults ended any chance at that happening.
Oudin turned pro in 2008 and played her first Grand Slam singles event at the Australian Open where she lost in the first round. The American failed to qualify for the French Open but made an impressive run at the All England Club including win over Jelena Jankovic before falling in the fourth round. This is her first appearance in the U.S. Open.
