Maria Sharapova, the former world’s number one, looked the part on Thursday night as she cruised past Christina McHale in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in the second round of the 2009 U.S. Open.
Sharapova struggled a bit with her first serve, putting just 50 percent in play but she managed to win 79 percent of those offerings. The Russian committed seven double faults and 20 unforced errors in the match but McHale was overmatched and could produce just six winners in the match.
Sharapova has won three Grand Slam singles titles in her career with her first coming at Wimbledon in 2004. Her next title came at the U.S. Open in 2006 and in 2008 she won the Australian Open, leaving the French Open as the only Grand Slam event she hasn’t won. Her best finish at Roland Garros was a semifinals appearance in 2007.
