Sacramento law firm, Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff announced today the donation of $14,391 to the nursing program at Yuba Community College.
The donation is part of a wage & hour class-action lawsuit, filed in April 2008 on behalf of all registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, monitor technicians, and respiratory therapists who worked 12-hour shifts at a health group in Marysville and Yuba City from March 2004 to September 2011.
In the settlement agreement, Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff and the health group agreed to donate any unclaimed money to a charity. After many unsuccessful attempts to track down class members who had settlement checks that were returned or uncased, lead counsel, Bill Kershaw decided to donate the unclaimed funds to the nursing program at YCCD.
During the firm's representation of the class, Kershaw and his staff worked closely with dozens of class members and they had come to understand first-hand how critically important these health care professionals were to the welfare of the Marysville and Yuba City communities.
"They are selfless and work hard to assure that the public receives the highest quality health care possible," said Kershaw. "Many of these health care professionals received their education and training at community colleges, which are currently experiencing serious shortfalls in funding in light of the state's fiscal crisis. For these reasons, we decided to make a CY Pres donation from the unclaimed funds of the class action settlement of the Yuba College Nursing Program to support the education and training of additional health care professionals for this region."
Sheila Scroggins, Director of Nursing/Allied Health at YCCD, said the funds could not have come at a better time.
"It is with great pleasure I accept this donation on behalf of the Yuba College Nursing Program and Simulation Center," said Scroggins. "In these fiscally difficult times, these funds will help meet some important unmet needs of the program and our students. Please accept our most heartfelt thanks from our student body, faculty, staff and alumni.”
Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff represents plaintiffs in a wide range of personal injury lawsuits,
pharmaceutical injury lawsuits and complex litigation. They have demonstrated their ability to devote substantial resources to lawsuits involving large corporations, generating hundreds of millions of dollars in recoveries for their clients and the classes they have represented.
