In what Attica Police Chief Asimakis Golfis labeled “an act of terrorism,” the U.S. Embassy in Greece was struck by an anti-tank shell that caused minor damage to the building but resulted in no injuries.
The shell struck the third floor of the U.S. Embassy located in Athens. Police believe the shot was fired from street level.
U.S. ambassador Charles Reis confirmed the blast and labeled the damage as “not extensive.”
Streets around the embassy were blocked off for hours as investigators searched for evidence that might indicate who fired the blast. They discovered what they believe may have been the device used to fire the shell at a construction site positioned near the embassy.
While the damage to the building was limited and no injuries were incurred Reis said “We're treating it as a very serious attack we will determine what it is when we know (more).”
