Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has opted to approve further settlement development in the West Bank, further angering Palestinians who had demanded further construction in the area be halted and called the news ‘absolutely unacceptable.”
Netanyahu has ignored the Palestinian demands as well as the requests of the United States to freeze construction projects in the West Bank. The PM has instead insisted new homes will go up in the area and when they are completed he will then consider a freeze to help restart peace talks with Palestinians.
Palestinians have insisted that there would be no peace agreement without Israel ending its settlement construction in the West Bank yet Israel has insisted eth construction was necessary to accommodate “natural growth” in the community.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs expressed frustration with Netanyahu’s approval, saying “We regret the reports of Israel's plans to approve additional settlement construction.”
