The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide, according to Associated Press.

Fiat said the selection was based on its economic, social and environmental performance.

The company cited the low carbon dioxide emissions of its cars and the development of environmentally friendly natural gas engines as some of its achievements in the sustainability field.

In June, Fiat took over Chrysler in exchange for its clean-engine and small-car technology.

Fiat shares closed up 0.32 percent at euro7.795 ($11.17) on the Milan Stock Exchange on Thursday.
