2009 U.S. Open Round 3 Results: Serena Williams Moves into Round 4 with Straight Set Win Over Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez

Serena Williams took another step toward repeating as U.S. Open champion, easing past Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 on Friday to move into the fourth round.

Serena hammered out seven aces in the match and won 78 percent of her first serves put in play while managing to break Martinez-Sanchez’s serve on four of 11 opportunities. The defending champ collected 30 winners in the match compared to just 18 for Martinez-Sanchez.

Williams has achieved a career Grand Slam with four titles at the Australian Open (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009), three titles at the U.S. Open (1999, 2002, 2008), three at Wimbledon (2002, 2003, 2009) and a French Open title (2002).
