AMERICAN MEDICAL WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS SINGLE-DOSE EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION
The American Medical Women's Association supports the FDA's recent approval of single-dose emergency contraception as an important step forward for women's reproductive health; women will now have another safe and effective option for pregnancy prevention. Plan B One Step simplifies the FDA-approved Plan B two-pill regimen that requires taking the first dose within 72 hours after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure and the second dose 12 hours later. Plan B One Step alters that regimen by having women take only one pill within the first 72 hour window and results in the same level of contraceptive efficacy as the two-pill regimen. As with Plan B, Plan B One Step is available over-the-counter for women age 17 and older and by prescription for women under 17. AMWA encourages the FDA to make Plan B One Step over the counter for women of all ages.
