Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has reached the third round at the 2009 U.S. Open after dispatching Jarkko Nieminen in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday.
Tsonga used his powerful serve to hammer out 11 aces and win 92 percent of his first serves put in play while never allowing Nieminen a break point. In contrast, Tsonga broke Nieminen’s serve on all three opportunities. Tsonga also collected 45 winners in the match compared to just 20 for Nieminen.
Tsonga’s best finish at a Grand Slam came at the 2008 Australian Open where he finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic. His best finish at the U.S. Open has been a third round appearance in 2007 and 2008.
