Hudson Horizons expands flooring directory to encompass Canadian stores
Earlier this month, Hudson Horizons launched directory.findanyfloor.com— a branch of the main site featuring local flooring stores. The comprehensive directory allows home-owners, interior designers, and anyone starting a new flooring project to easily locate flooring professionals in their area.
The initial launch of directory.findanyfloor.com featured listings across the 50 U.S. states, catering to a variety of flooring materials, such as bamboo, hardwood, stone, tile, and carpet. Hudson Horizons has helped expand that network, which now includes 600 dealers in Canada. The local flooring store directory will continue to grow over the next three months.
Hudson Horizons VP of Technology, Matt Mayernik, commented on the proud accomplishment, emphasizing the obstacles his Web 2.0 Development team had to overcome in order to deliver accurate, quality international flooring store listings.
“The biggest challenge we faced was developing a Zip Code search process for Canada – simply put, it was a tremendous amount of data to integrate into the system,” said Mayernik.
He pointed out that the United States has approximately 80,000 geographically-dispersed Zip Codes throughout the country.
“The Canadian government defines postal codes slightly differently,” Mayernik explained. “And there are over 800,000 of them.”
To further demonstrate the project’s enormity, Mayernik highlighted that the there are an estimated 82,000 postal codes in city of Montreal alone.
In order to accommodate the extensive amount of Canadian postal codes, the preexisting Zip Code algorithm used in the initial flooring store directory had to be completely redefined. Additionally, Mayernik integrated custom structured data and microformats to make the content in the directory completely SEO-friendly.
The finished product represents a dynamic, all-inclusive local flooring directory encompassing hundreds of flooring stores throughout the United States as well as Canada—all of which can be accessed through search by floor material, state, city, territory, or postal code.
