Several Dead After Sightseeing Boat Sinks in Macedonia

Officials have said at least 19 people have died and several more remain missing after a sightseeing boat sank in Lake Ohrid in Macedonia.

The Ilinden had a permit for a maximum capacity of 45 but it was believed to be carrying 73 passengers when it split in two and sank about 200m from shore. Police have said about 50 passengers were rescued but they expect the death toll to rise as divers search the waters.

The passengers, said to be mainly Bulgarian tourists, had been on their way to the St. Naum monastery complex when the boat broke in half and sank within minutes.
