The man police suspect of attempting to assassinate the leader of the Russian republic of Ingushetia has been shot and killed following a traffic stop.
Police have said Rustam Dzorotov planned the June suicide bomb attack that badly injured President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, leaving him with head and chest injuries.
According to reports Dzorotov, along with two other men, were stopped by security forces while traveling near the city of Magas. After their vehicle was stopped the men opened fire on the officers and a gunfight ensued. Two of the men were killed on the scene but Dzorotov managed to escape but his body was later found near the scene.
Dzorotov was believed to be tied to militant groups in neighboring Chechnya where clashes with pro-Russian security forces are frequent occurrences.
