Secret Santa Dies in Missouri

Beginning in December 1979 Larry Stewart took on the persona of one of the best kept secrets in holiday lore. Handing a woman a $20 bill on a cold winter night Stewart began his legacy as Secret Santa. His altruistic identity kept hidden, Stewart walked the streets each Christmas season for the next 26 years handing out over $1 million to those in need.

On Friday Stewart died at the age of 58 from complications related to esophageal cancer.

Stewart was diagnosed with the disease in April and in November he revealed to the public that he was the man the media had dubbed Secret Santa.

Having amassed his fortune in cable television and long-distance telephone service Stewart recognized that the act of giving was more rewarding than receiving.

Known for handing out hundred dollar bills to those he came across, Stewart felt the need to call people into action. His strong belief in helping others led to countless other individuals taking part in random acts of kindness.

This past December Stewart handed out over $100,000 during his final holiday.
