Shia Rebels and Yemen Forces Clash Hours after Truce Agreement Reached

Violent clashes between Shia rebels and Yemen security forces have taken place just hours after a truce agreement was reached between the two sides.

The Sunni government has accused the Shia rebels of attempting to take over the country while the rebels have claimed persecution. Both sides had agreed to a truce on humanitarian grounds, an agreement that would allow aid agencies to help the thousands of people who have fled their homes due to violence.

That truce has now collapsed as the government has accused the rebels of carrying out attacks against army positions. In turn, the military responded with counter-attacks and now there are reports of numerous casualties.

According to the International Committee for the Red Cross there are more than 25,000 displaced people, many of which are women and children. Attempts to provide aid to those displaced has been difficult as violence between the Shia rebels and government forces have kept aid agencies at a distance.
