Costello & Mains, P.C. founding partner Kevin M. Costello, a certified civil trial attorney who concentrates his practice in employment and civil rights, appeared on Harry Hurley's morning show on 1450 am/97.3 fm to discuss school bullying in New Jersey. He appeared as part of a three person panel discussing bullying in the schools generally, prevention, effects, and legal remedies.
"I'm always thrilled to educate at all," Kevin says. "Being a
trial lawyer means teaching, though mostly, it's to juries. Having an opportunity to do something so important - talking about a subject which literally destroys lives and if not dealt with the right way has a downstream affect in our society as a whole - is an honor and a privilege. The panel was excellent, Mr. Hurley moved the show along well, and there was not nearly enough time to take all the phone calls, questions and comments that an obviously very engaged public had to offer."
Kevin says that this is a subject which needs a great deal more discussion not only in terms of response to bullying, but also in terms of prevention. "Acting like the problem is simply a wound to be bandaged, which is the current budget approach, is not enough," Kevin says. "Teaching bullies not to bully and teaching witnesses and apologists for bullies not to support the conduct, both at the professional level and at the student level, will transform our society in a way that benefits everyone when these kids grow up. That's where the budgeting has to go: the educational efforts, and yes, the legal responses."
