Roger Federer dropped his first set on the 2009 U.S. Open but managed to regroup and battled his way past Lleyton Hewitt on Saturday, taking the match 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the fourth round and stay on pace for his 16th career Grand Slam singles title.
Federer had an uncharacteristic 59 unforced errors in the match but his 15 aces and 51 winners were enough to make up for the mistakes. The Swiss star continued to use his serve to his advantage, winning 74 percent of his first serves put in play and managed to break Hewitt on five of 11 opportunities.
Federer recently captured his first title at the French Open, marking a career Grand Slam as he has won Wimbledon six times, the U.S. Open five times and the Australian Open three times.
