2009 U.S. Open Round 3 Results: Melanie Oudin Moves into Fourth Road after Shocking Maria Sharapova

Melanie Oudin continued her dramatic rise in women’s tennis, stunning former world number one Maria Sharapova 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 on Saturday to advance into the fourth round of the 2009 U.S. Open.

While Oudin played solid on Saturday she caught a big break as Sharapova struggled all day with her serve, committing an astounding 21 double faults and 63 unforced errors. The 17-year-old Oudin was coming off a shocking win over #4 seeded Elena Dementieva and now sits one win away from reaching her first Grand Slam singles quarterfinals.

Oudin turned pro in 2008 and played her first Grand Slam singles event at the Australian Open where she lost in the first round. The American failed to qualify for the French Open but made an impressive run at the All England Club including win over Jelena Jankovic before falling in the fourth round. This is her first appearance in the U.S. Open.
