2009 U.S. Open Round 3 Results: Rafael Nadal Shakes Off Nicolas Almagro to Advance into Fourth Round

Rafael Nadal didn’t play his best tennis but the former world number one fought through some problems and managed to get past Nicolas Almagro in straight sets 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 to move into the fourth round at the 2009 U.S. Open.

Nadal struggled with his serve, winning points on just 62 percent of his first serves put in play and the Spaniard had his serve broke on five of 13 opportunities but he was able to capitalize on Almagro’s inconsistency. Almagro finished with 52 unforced errors and 9 double faults while allowing his serve to be broke on eight out of 13 times.

Nadal, the won the Australian Open earlier this year but then fell in the fourth round at the French Open to Robin Söderling  after winning the Grand Slam event the past four years. Nadal then withdrew from Wimbledon due to his knee injury. In 2008 Nadal captured his first Wimbledon title leaving the U.S. Open as the only Grand Slam event the 22-year-old Spaniard hasn’t won.
