Kim Clijsters continued her improbable run through the 2009 U.S. Open, stunning two-time champ Venus Williams in three sets 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 on Sunday to move into the quarterfinals of the year’s final Grand Slam event.
Clijsters, who entered the U.S. Open as a wildcard, managed to break the powerful serve of Venus on four of seven opportunities while winning 64 percent of her first serves put in play. The Belgian was also able to capitalize on the mistakes of Venus as she committed five double faults that cost her valuable points.
Clijsters, the former world’s number one, captured her only Grand Slam singles title at the U.S. Open in 2005 after beating Mary Pierce. She has reached the finals at the French Open twice and the Australian Open once.
