AP Top 25 Scoreboard from Jan. 13

Tar Heels upset; Buckeyes, Badgers, Bruins and Jayhawks survive; Gators continue to roll.

It didn’t did take long for the #1 North Carolina Tar Heels (15-2) to experience the same result several other #1’s have faced this year. ACC giant killer, the Virginia Tech Hokies (13-4), pulled off another upset after beating NC 94-88. Zabian Dowdell scored 23 points for the Hokies while Jamon Gordon and AD Vassallo each scored 17 in the win. North Carolina struggled with their perimeter game shooting just 30 percent from three-point territory.

The #2 Florida Gators (16-2) had little trouble dismantling the overmatched South Carolina Gamecocks (10-5) 84-50. Lee Humphrey scored 27 points for the Gators and Al Horford added 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Gamecocks trailed by 8 at the break but Florida outscored South Carolina 41-17 in the second half to earn the SEC victory.

The #3 Wisconsin Badgers (17-1) out-rebounded the Northwestern Wildcats (10-7) 36-19 and survived a scare to win 56-50. Alando Tucker scored 17 points and had 8 rebounds while Brian Butch finished with 9 points and 8 rebounds to avoid the upset. Northwestern was up 26-24 after the first half but couldn’t put their Big 10 foe away. The win was Wisconsin’s 13th straight.

With 4 seconds remaining Aaron Afflalo hit a 15-footer to lift the #4 UCLA Bruins (15-1) past the USC Trojans (13-5) 65-64. Afflalo finished with 15 points while Darren Collison had 17 points to earn the PAC 10 win. Nick Young led the Trojans with 14 points but USC could only manage 50 percent shooting from the foul line.

Greg Oden played huge for the #5 Ohio State Buckeyes (14-3) finishing with 24 points, 15 rebounds, and 4 assists in their 68-66 win over the #16 Tennessee Volunteers (13-4). Mike Conley Jr. added 16 points for the Buckeyes who shot 43 percent from the field and 90 percent from the charity stripe. Tennessee could manage just 45 percent shooting from the free-throw line and 22 percent from beyond the three-point arch.

The #6 Kansas Jayhawks (15-2) survived a scare and beat the Iowa State Cyclones (11-6) 68-64 in overtime. The Jayhawks dominated the glass with a 45-31 advantage with Julian Wright accounting for 12 of those boards. Sasha Kaun led Kansas with 13 points on 6 of 8 shooting. Mike Taylor led the Cyclones with 21 points in the loss.

Mike Cook scored 18 points to lead the #7 Pittsburgh Panthers (16-2) past their Big East rival Georgetown Hoyas (11-5) 74-69. Jeff Green and Jessie Sapp each scored 15 points for the Hoyas. Both teams shot well from the floor with Georgetown hitting 60 percent of their shots while the Panthers connected on 59 percent of their attempts.

Joseph Jones had 18 points and 15 rebounds while Acie Law IV finished with 21 points to lead the #8 Texas A&M Aggies (15-2) past the Colorado Buffaloes (4-9) 87-69. The Aggies connected on 57 percent of their three-point attempts while the Buffaloes hit just 16 percent from the same distance. Dominique Coleman finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds for Colorado.

The #12 Butler Bulldogs (15-2) held the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (4-13) to just 14 points in the first half and went on win 62-47. Brandon Crone led the Bulldogs with 14 points and 6 rebounds and Pete Campbell added 11 points for Butler. The Bulldogs shot 51 percent from the field while the Jackrabbits hit just 36 percent of their shots.

Terry Martin led the #13 LSU Tigers (12-4) past the Auburn Tigers (11-7) 65-63. Martin finished with 23 points while Glen Davis ended his night with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Tigers. LSU out-rebounded the Tigers 39-23 on the night. LSU survived a dismal performance at the foul-line with 57 percent shooting.

The Maryland Terrapins (15-3) handed the #17 Clemson Tigers (17-1) their first loss of the year 92-87. All five Maryland starters scored in double figures with Ekene Ibekwe leading the way with 20 points. Ibekwe added 10 rebounds to his line as well. Maryland shot 80 percent from the foul line while Clemson hit a miserable 38 percent. James Mays led the Tigers with 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Jacob Burtschi hit a shot at the buzzer to lift the #18 Air Force Falcons (17-1) past the Wyoming Cowboys (11-6) 58-56. Burtschi finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds for the Falcons. Brandon Ewing led the Cowboys with 15 points. The Falcons forced the Cowboys into 16 turnovers.

Ramon Sessions scored 19 points and Kyle Shiloh added 18 points as the #19 Nevada Wolf Pack (16-1) knocked off the Hawaii Warriors (10-7) 68-66 in overtime. Ahmet Gueye scored 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Warriors while Matt Lojeski finished with 17.

The #20 Memphis Tigers (13-3) got 23 points from Chris Douglas-Roberts and Joey Dorsey scored 14 points and 11 rebounds to beat the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (11-4) 75-62. Douglas-Roberts had 14 of his points from the foul-line. Craig Craft led Southern miss with 21 points in the loss.

Dominic James scored 21 points, had 6 assists, and 5 rebounds to give the Marquette Golden Eagles (15-4) an 81-63 upset victory over the #21 West Virginia Warriors (13-3). Jerel McNeal had a strong game for the Golden Eagles with 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Anthony Goods scored 30 points and Lawrence Hill added 15 points and 9 rebounds as the Stanford Cardinals (11-4) beat the #22 Washington State Cougars (15-3) 71-68 in overtime. Kyle Weaver led the Cougars with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The #24 Connecticut Huskies (13-3) got 13 points and 12 rebounds from Stanley Robinson and 12 points and 10 rebounds from Hasheem Thabeet to beat the St. John’s Red Storm (10-7) 68-59. Thabeet added 7 blocks to his line for the Huskies.
