Israel Approves Construction of New Homes in West Bank

Israel has officially approved the construction of nearly 500 new homes in the West Bank, the new government-approved construction project in the troubled area since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took office in March.

The decision has angered Palestinians who contested any new settlement development in the West Bank and have made that a condition of any peace agreement between the two sides.

Netanyahu had also felt pressure from the United States to halt any future development yet in the end the prime minister has vowed to meet the demands of Israelis and continue to construct houses.

According to senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, “Given the choice between making peace and making settlements, they have chosen to make settlements.”
