‘Stomp’ Steps Out While ‘Night’ Stays In

The new movie “Stomp the Yard” ended the three-week reign of “Night at the Museum” at the weekend box office. Pulling in $22 million in ticket sales, the movie surrounding a story of street dance edged past Ben Stiller and a museum that takes on a life of its own when the lights go out at night. Despite being bumped by “Stomp the Yard,” the Stiller flick raked in another $17.1 million to push its four week total to over $185 million.

Will Smith has been receiving a lot of talk for his newest film “Pursuit of Happyness” which landed in the number three spot at the box office. Based on a true story, Smith depicts a homeless man who struggles to achieve his dreams while supporting his son.
‘Happyness’ took in $9.1 million over the weekend.

Still receiving a lot of buzz after winning several awards and nominations, “Dreamgirls” finished fourth with $8.1 million. Beyonce, Eddie Murphy, and Jennifer Hudson have been nominated for Golden Globes for their performance. The movie is also up for Best Musical or Comedy.

Hilary Swank, still celebrating her recent star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, found that moviegoers may be getting tired of the inner-city teacher that turns students into believers. “Freedom Writers” earned $7.1 million for the three-day period.

Justin Timberlake found that music fans don’t necessarily translate into moviegoers as his new movie “Alpha Dog” went over like pound puppy at the box office. The $6.1 million it earned was good enough for seventh.
