A Sudanese woman who refused to pay a fine for violating a decency law by wearing pants has been ordered to serve a month in jail.
Lubna Ahmed Hussein originally faced forty lashes for “dressing indecently” but when her cases made world headlines the judge in the case opted to order her to pay a $200 fine. Rather than give the verdict “any legitimacy” Hussein, a journalist, refused to pay the fine and accepted the jail term.
According to her lawyer, Nabil Adib, “She will stay in prison, she doesn't want to give the verdict any legitimacy. She thinks she was unfairly tried and convicted, and was not given a proper chance to put her defense case.”
Hussein had been working for the United Nations but resigned from her position which would have provided her immunity in the case. She, along with 12 other women, were arrested on July 12 for violating a Sudanese criminal law that prohibits women from wearing pants.
