UK Court Finds Three Men Guilty in Plot to Blow Up Planes with Liquid Bombs

A UK court has found three men guilty of conspiring to blow up planes flying from London to North America with home-made liquid bombs.

The three men, Abdulla Ahmed Ali, 28, Tanvir Hussain, 28, and Assad Sarwar, 29, were arrested in August 2006 after they conspired to disguise bombs as drinks that they planned to place aboard at least seven flights.

According to Sue Hemming of the Crown Prosecution Service the three men had constructed “a calculated and sophisticated plot to create a terrorist event of global proportions.” The prosecution argued that had the plot been carried out the death toll would have been significantly higher that the September 11 attacks in the United States.

The jury in the case heard how the men had secured bomb ingredients as well as established a bomb-making factory in a London flat. In that flat then men had planned to mix the chemicals and then disguise them in ordinary sports drinks bottles and store them within land luggage.

That luggage would have then been placed on flights originating from London en route to Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Washington, Montreal and Toronto. The bomb plot had the explosions occurring within a 2 ½ hour window while the planes were over the Atlantic.

The defense argued that the men had only been attempting to stage a political stunt and had no intention of blowing up flights.

This was the second trial for the three men, having already been convicted of conspiracy to murder but that jury could not come to an agreement on whether that conspiracy actually included plans to detonate devices on the planes.
