Lady Gaga is giving back to New York City in a big way – the superstar donated $1 million to the Superstorm Sandy Relief effort. Lady Gaga announced her pledge in a post on her official website.
“Today I pledge 1 million dollars to New York & The American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief. If it wasn't for NYC: the Lower Eastside, Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn, I would not be the woman or artist that I am today. New York is relentless ambition, a drive to succeed, a place where there is a natural pursuit of diversity through compassion. Please accept this gift on behalf of myself, my parents Joe and Cynthia, and my sister Natali; with our deepest gratitude New York for raising us. Thank you for helping me build my spirit. I will now help you rebuild yours. Sincerely, Lady Gaga and The Germanottas,” she wrote.
Superstorm Sandy devastated much of the northeast with major damage and massive flooding. At least 113 people were killed in the storm. "Hurricane Sandy's path of destruction stretched hundreds of miles and impacted millions of people and this will be one of the biggest Red Cross relief operations in the past five years," said Red Cross president and CEO Gail McGovern.
Celebrities have made a big push to raise money for the relief effort. Christina Aguilera, Steven Tyler, Matt Lauer, Tina Fey and numerous other celebrities participated in the Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together telethon last week. The telethon raised $23 million for the Red Cross.
"We are incredibly grateful and humbled by this outpouring of support for those who are suffering as a result of Superstorm Sandy. Our preliminary results of nearly $23 million raised are an extraordinary example of how the American people pull together in times of disaster. Their generous donations will go directly to those in need, and we urge the public to continue to give," said Red Cross Chief Marketing Officer Peggy Dyer.
