Sandy Causes Relapse, Treatment Surge

The trauma of this powerful storm is leading some in recovery to relapse and others to seek treatment, but where can you turn if facilities in your area are full?

The name “Sandy” seems innocuous, but 23 states were affected by the hurricane-turned-superstorm that bore that name and stretched for nearly 600 miles, knocking out power along the Eastern seaboard and caused flooding, fires and snowstorms. The death toll is currently at 110 and could still climb, and damage estimates of around $50 billion make it the second costliest storm in history behind Hurricane Katrina. New York City's 108-year-old subway system suffered the most extensive damage in its history, and the storm managed to shutter the New York Stock Exchange for two consecutive days, the first time this has happened because of weather since 1888.

The storm is also affecting the world of addiction and recovery. The trauma and stress for those in affected areas is leading some in recovery to relapse, pushing them back toward their substance of choice. Others who were ready to seek treatment for alcohol or substance abuse are finding it hard to locate a treatment facility with available space. Beds that would be available for detox patients during under normal circumstances are now being commandeered for storm victims.

It’s not surprising that addiction issues were stirred up by Sandy’s powerful winds and the damage left in her wake. Times of trouble are known to exacerbate addiction issues, and the losses of life, property and routine can urge some who were in denial to finally consider seeking treatment. This leads to overcrowding at hospitals that are overtaxed by the original event or events.
