Colorado’s Amendment 64 Passes, Legalizing Pot Use

With a federal prohibition on marijuana use, will Coloradans ever be free to light up, and, if they do, what’s the downside?

Most Americans were glued to their TVs on election night to see the results of the presidential race, but there was also newsworthy legislation that passed on the state level. Amendment 64 was passed by Colorado voters. The measure legalizes marijuana for recreational use by adults, making Colorado the first state to make such use legal.

What isn’t getting much airtime or media coverage is the potential danger of widespread marijuana use. Proponents of the measure argued that pot was not as dangerous as alcohol,  but that provides little comfort to addiction and treatment professionals who see the effects of marijuana and alcohol abuse. Legalizing what is often seen as a gateway drug could lead to a rise in addiction rates in Colorado. Others argue that regulating marijuana will allow law enforcement to have more control over its use by individuals, particularly those who are under age.

Only time will tell if the amendment will actually lead to legal recreational pot use in Colorado or inspire similar legislation in other states. It could be as long as a year before the 21-and-over crowd can obtain any legal marijuana in Colorado. Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper pointed out that “federal law still says marijuana is an illegal drug, so don’t break out the Cheetos or goldfish too quickly.” On a more serious note the governor, who was against the measure, also added, “The voters have spoken, and we have to respect their will. This will be a complicated process, but we intend to follow through.” The newly passed amendment specifies that marijuana be taxed and regulated similar to alcohol and tobacco, and this tax could generate anywhere from $5 million to $22 million per year for Colorado according to the Associated Press. However others project that the enforcement of Colorado’s new pot law could lead to a showdown with the federal government.
