Peoples Flowers Shares Experience with Bridgewater Candles Honduras Orphanage Project

Albuquerque florist Peoples Flower Shops participated in a Bridgewater Candle Company service project to deliver supplies to a Honduran orphanage. Monica Martinez shares her moving experience.

Bridgewater Candles are scented candles with a special mission. The Light a Candle Feed a Child Program means that every jar candle sold feeds a child for a day through a partnership with Rice Bowls, a nonprofit that aids orphans in developing countries.

Monica Martinez, Peoples Flowers' human resource manager, has been selling Bridgewater Candles through Peoples for years. She recently learned first-hand where the donated money from the sale of the candles goes to.

Martinez traveled with Bridgewater representatives to deliver much-needed supplies to an orphanage in Honduras. "After witnessing how bad it can be in other countries I now understand why Bridgewater and Rice Bowls are choosing to support these people," says Martinez.

Martinez handed out clean water at a trash dump where families survive on scraps. She then visited the nearby Good Sheppard’s Children’s Home and saw how contributions from Bridgewater change the lives of the young boys and girls the orphanage takes in. "It was beautiful and the children there are so happy; a much different situation that I had just witnessed," she says.

Bridgewater candles are available at Peoples retail locations in Albuquerque. "When you buy a candle, you are truly making a difference in the life of an orphan by giving them the chance to live a better life, by having something that we all too often take for granted: a meal," says Martinez.
