Only at a Hollywood awards show would an actress portraying the royal figure Elizabeth I share the stage with an actor portraying the raunchy role of Borat from Kazakhstan. Yet it was the 64th annual Golden Globe Awards at he Beverly Hilton Hotel and odd couples will meet.
For some the winner’s circle was a reunion of sorts. The critically acclaimed musical Dreamgirls won three Golden Globe Awards. With Best Musical, Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Hudson, and Best Supporting Actor for Eddie Murphy, there was plenty of time for the cast to catch up with each other.
"Babel" won Best Picture at the Globes beating out “Bobby,” “The Departed,” “Little Children,” and “The Queen.”
While “The Queen” didn’t take Best Picture it did produce a Best Actress award for Helen Mirren as well as Best Screenplay for Peter Morgan. Mirren’s night wasn’t all about Elizabeth II, her role in “The Queen,” she also won Best Actress in a television movie or miniseries for her role in HBO’s “Elizabeth I.” Mirren performed double duty as England’s matriarch with roles as both mother and daughter in separate films. “Elizabeth I” was also awarded Best Television Movie or Miniseries and Jeremy Irons was awarded Best Supporting Actor in the picture.
Forest Whitaker’s role as Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland” earned him the Golden Globe for Best Actor. Whitaker fended off tough competition from double-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio, Peter O’Toole, and Will Smith.
The night was made complete by the Kazakhstani journalist Borat, a role which gave the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy to Sacha Baron Cohen. Cohen’s acceptance speech was enough to make half the actors and actresses double over in laughter.
Cohen’s equal as Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical went to Meryl Streep who won her sixth Golden Globe for her role in “The Devil Wears Prada.”
If the Oscar’s follow the path of the Golden Globes, Martin Scorsese may finally get his Best Director award. Scoreses was presented with Best Director for “The Departed,” it was his second such awards from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The Academy Awards have proven more elusive for the director; having fallen short on four previous nominations he has his hat in the ring once again this year with a strong cast that includes Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Clint Eastwood was awarded Best Foreign Language film for “Letters from Iwo Jima.”
