After picking up the Golden Globe Award for Best Director, Martin Scorsese once again finds himself the focus of Oscar talk. Having been nominated on five separate occasions for Best Director, Scorsese has fallen short each time. Scorsese’s Oscar drought could come to an end this year after his film “The Departed” earned him Best Director at the Golden Globes January 15.
While votes for Academy Awards nominees have already been collected, a win at the Golden Globes often translates into an Oscar. Often, but not always. Scorsese actually won a Golden Globe in 2003 for “Gangs of New York” but Roman Polanski was awarded the Oscar that year for “The Pianist.”
If Scorsese does earn an Oscar nomination for “The Departed” this very well could be the year he makes the trip to the stage. With an all-star cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, and Martin Sheen, Scorsese’s flick may carry enough Hollywood clout to earn him the nod.
Scorsese’s win at the Golden Globes was his second after collecting seven nominations.
Martin Scorsese films that have earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Director include: 1981- Raging Bull (lost to Robert Redford: Ordinary People); 1989- The Last Temptation of Christ (lost to Barry Levinson: Rain Man); 1991- Goodfellas (lost to Kevin Costner: Dances with Wolves); 2003- Gangs of New York (lost to Roman Polanski: The Pianist); 2005- The Aviator (lost to Clint Eastwood: Million Dollar Baby).
Nominations for this years Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 23 and the Feb 25 show at the Kodak Theater in L.A. will be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.
