Two Norwegian men have been sentenced to death in the Democratic Republic of Congo after being found guilty of killing a Congolese driver in May.
Both Joshua French, 27, and Tjostolv Moland, 28, have denied the charges which included a count of espionage as well as arms smuggling. Norway has denied French and Moland were carrying out acts of espionage on the part of the government and has expressed serious concern over the fairness of the trial.
In an interview aired on BBC’s Europe Today Norway’s foreign minister Jonas Gahr Stoere addressed that concern saying, “From a Norwegian position we clearly denounce death sentences against two Norwegian citizens and we also clearly denounce accusations that there has been espionage on behalf of Norway.”
French and Moland, former members of Norway’s armed forces, told the court their driver was shot and killed when they were attacked by a group of gunmen near Kisangani.
