President Barack Obama Delivers Educational Speech to America’s Schoolchildren

President Barack Obama delivered his educational speech to America’s schoolchildren on Tuesday afternoon, urging students to set goals, work hard and never give up.

During his address, set at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia and aired in schoolrooms across America, Obama also stressed the importance of students understanding that ultimately it was their responsibility to succeed in the classroom.

Obama assured students that “No matter what you want to do with your life - I guarantee you'll need an education to do it.” He went on to detail his own path in education, outlining how his mother would teach him lessons early in the morning before she left for work. It was that foundation that led him to further his education, eventually attending law school and paving the way to the White House.

Much of the President’s speech focused on the importance of turning failures into success, telling the students that those who achieve the most are often the ones who have failed but learned from their mistakes.

Obama had faced some criticism for delivering the speech to schoolchildren, many of those protesters fearing that he was trying to indoctrinate the students to serve his agenda. Those protesters pointed to a series of teaching aids that were to follow the speech which asked the students how they could best serve the goals of the president.

The wording of some of those teaching aids were changed to lighten the criticism but White House spokesman Robert Gibbs scoffed at the critics saying it was a “sad, sad day that the political back-and-forth has intruded on anyone's speaking to schoolchildren and parents about the responsibilities they have.”
