U.S. Open 2009 Round 4 Results: Marin Cilic Stuns Andy Murray for Spot in Quarterfinals

Marin Cilic has moved into the quarterfinals of the 2009 U.S. Open after stunning the number two seeded Andy Murray in straight sets 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

 

Cilic kept Murray off balance with a dominant serve that produced ten aces and winners on 79 percent of his first offerings put in play. While Cilic committed 41 unforced errors he also had 35 winners and broke Murray’s serve on five of nine chances. In comparison, Murray had just 13 winners and failed to break Cilic’s serve on all seven opportunities.

 

Cilic has yet to win a Grand Slam singles title and his berth into the quarterfinals represents his deepest run at any Grand Slam event. His previous best finish was fourth round appearances at Wimbledon, the French Open and the Australian Open.
