College Football AP Top 25 Week 1 Rankings: Florida Gators and Texas Longhorns Hold Firm at #1 and #2, BYU Jumps to #9
The college football rankings have already experienced a shakeup after just one week of action as the AP Top 25 saw a pair of schools drop from the top ten while three more fell from the ranks all together. Both Oklahoma and Virginia Tech saw significant drops after losses in week one as the Sooners fell from number three to #13 following a loss to the BYU Cougars and the Hokies fell from number seven to #14 after losing to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Week one upsets weren’t exclusive to the top ten though as the Oregon Ducks dropped from the AP Top 25 after falling to the Boise State Broncos and the Florida State Seminoles fell to the Miami Hurricanes on Monday night, dropping them from the rankings. The Iowa Hawkeyes found that a narrow victory over Northern Iowa wasn’t enough to keep them among the Top 25 as they now sit outside looking in.
Despite the upsets the AP Top 25 remained unchanged at #1 and #2 as the Florida Gators and Texas Longhorns rolled to keep their spot in the rankings. The USC Trojans breezed past San Jose State to inch up one spot to #3 while the Alabama Crimson Tide used their impressive win over the Hokies to claim the #4 spot. Oklahoma State dominated the Georgia Bulldogs and were rewarded with a four-spot bump up to #5 this week.
The biggest jump was handed to the BYU Cougars who stunned the Sooners and moved from #20 to #9 and are now in great position already to make noise in the BCS. BYU wasn’t the only school parlaying an impressive win into a jump in the rankings as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish vaulted from #23 to #18 after an impressive shutout victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack.
With their victory over the Seminoles on Monday night the Miami Hurricanes jumped into the AP Top 25, now sitting at #20 while the Cincinnati Bearcats and Missouri Tigers also made their way into the AP Top 25 with wins over Rutgers and Illinois respectively.
