After searching for a Gwyneth Paltrow type actress for the role of Virginia “Pepper” Potts, Marvel’s president of production, Kevin Feige, opted to ask the Academy Award winner directly.
Paltrow is set to join a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Terrence Howard as Rhodey, Stark’s best friend.
Created by comic book legends Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck and Jack Kirby for Marvel Comics, Iron Man is based on a character who is both billionaire industrialist (Tony Stark) and world protector (Iron Man).
Using a high-tech suit he invented, Stark changes into Iron Man in times of crisis.
Paltrow will play Stark’s the personal assistant “Pepper.”
The movie, set for 2008, will be produced by Marvel Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Pictures.
Paltrow won a Best Actress Oscar in 1999 for “Shakespeare in Love.” Downey Jr. was nominated for Best Actor for his role in “Chaplin” in 1992. Terrence Howard was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in 2006’s “Hustle and Flow.”
