2009 U.S. Open Round 4 Results: Rafael Nadal Drops First Set but Knocks Off Gael Monfils to Advance into Quarterfinals

Rafael Nadal is one step closer to capturing a career Grand Slam after battling back from a set down to knock off Gael Monfils in the fourth round of the 2009 U.S. Open, taking the Frenchman in four sets 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 on Tuesday night.

 

Nadal once again relied on consistent play to move on in the U.S. Open, limiting his unforced errors to 24 and putting 74 percent of his first serves in play, winning on 73 percent of those offerings. While Monfils featured a big serve, collecting ten aces, he did himself in with 63 unforced errors in the match.

 

Nadal, the won the Australian Open earlier this year but then fell in the fourth round at the French Open to Robin Söderling  after winning the Grand Slam event the past four years. Nadal then withdrew from Wimbledon due to his knee injury. In 2008 Nadal captured his first Wimbledon title leaving the U.S. Open as the only Grand Slam event the 22-year-old Spaniard hasn’t won.
