Flooding in Turkey Leaves at least 23 People Dead, Several More Missing

Torrential rains in and around Turkey’s largest city of Istanbul have produced deadly flash floods that have killed at least 23 people and left several more missing.

The city has been pounded by heavy rains over the past two days, turning streets in low-lying areas into raging rivers that have swept away cars, trees and unstable structures. Police and military crews have been rescuing people from rooftops as the waters have steadily swallowed homes and buildings.

Perhaps the hardest hit district, Ikitelli, has been described as a “disaster” by Istanbul’s Deputy Governor Hikmet Cakmak. At least two bridges have collapsed in the district and rescue crews are continuing to search houses and buildings for people trapped by the flooding.

Forecasters have predicted more rain for Turkey, sparking fears that the flooding could continue for several more days.
